Nutrient Neutrality Funding
This Fund is in place to help address the issue of nutrient neutrality in Norfolk and to release stalled planning applications.
Published: 3 March 2025
The Nutrient Mitigation Fund (Norfolk) is a collaboration between Broadland District Council, South Norfolk Council, Breckland Council, North Norfolk District Council and Norwich City Council.
Many planning applications across Norfolk are currently held up due to nutrient neutrality, with the need to be able to demonstrate that additional development will not increase the levels of phosphorus and nitrogen in our rivers.
By working together the Councils are able to offer Grant funding to undertake feasibility work, and capital loans to deliver nutrient reduction projects across Norfolk. Providing the opportunity for landowners and businesses to bring forward projects to reduce the levels of phosphorus and nitrogen currently entering our vulnerable watercourses – the River Wensum and The Broads.
Credits are generated from the nutrient mitigation, and the landowners can use these credits themselves for their own developments or sell them on, generating income for themselves.
